    • 08 Apr 2017
    • 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM
    • St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2430 K St, NW, Washington, DC 20037

On Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 PM, the Cornell Chorus, under the direction of Robert Isaacs, will conclude its 2017 Atlantic Coast Tour with a performance at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2430 K Street, NW, in Washington, DC

The program will feature both classical and contemporary women’s choral music, including the Washington premier of two works by Mia Makaroff - Perception Test and Jump the Chromosome - commissioned by the Chorus. Jump the Chromosome will have special meaning for Cornellians because it celebrates the pathbreaking career of Cornell’s own Barbara McClintock, who won the Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine in 1983 for her discovery of transposons, also known as “jumping genes.”

The Chorus’s a cappella subset, After Eight, will also perform a few pop favorites, and the program will close with beloved Cornell Songs. Tickets for the concert are available for $20 ($15 for students) and can be purchased in advance at http://bit.ly/2lwcgIf.  St. Paul’s is an intimate venue with seating for only 250 people, so we expect this performance will sell out.

As you may know, the expense of a Chorus tour is significant and is rarely covered by the sale of tickets.  We hope you will consider a donation to help underwrite the costs of the Chorus’s visit and the reception that will follow this year’s concert.  While the concert is general admission, all sponsorships include prime tickets in a reserved section of the Church, and certain sponsorships come with reserved parking behind the Church.  Additional information on sponsorships can be found here.  Any questions about the concert should be directed to CUChorusinDC@gmail.com.

    • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
    • Main Fountain in Dupont Circle

Washington DC is a city rich in outdoor sculpture, crafted by some of the top sculptors in American history.  But we hustle by these remarkable works of art without really stopping to understand the people they depict, the events they commemorate, the artists who create them, and their contribution to the symbolism of the Nation’s Capital.

When: Sunday, April 23, 2017, 10:00 am. For those interested, we will have brunch after the tour at Logan Tavern at 1443 P Street, just east of Logan Circle.

Price: Tour $5.00 - Member; $7.00 Nonmember. Brunch is pay your own way.

Where: Please meet at the DuPont Fountain in the center of Dupont Circle.  Rain or Shine.

Note: Since we will be walking several miles in all, although when possible we will sit while listening to the narrative about the sculpture, please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, and please have rain gear and umbrellas if rain seems likely.

Tour Description: For this event, we slow down our hustle to a leisurely walking tour of the finest works on a street rich with sculpture, particularly of Civil War heroes:  Massachusetts Avenue.

We will gather at the Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Dupont Memorial Fountain, with architecture by Henry Bacon and sculpture by Daniel Chester French—the same duo who created the Lincoln Memorial and the great statue of Lincoln himself.  We’ll proceed west along the north side of Massachusetts Avenue to the Braque Bird at the Phillips Collection, the walking sculpture of Gandhi before the Indian Embassy, and the equestrian statue of Civil War General Philip Sheridan in Sheridan Circle.  The tour will then double back past the Buffaloes and Indian heads of the Dumbarton Bridge; the portrait sculpture of Ukrainian patriot Taras Shevchenko; the Society of the Cincinnati’s Anderson House, with its rich sculptured pediment; the Balinese Demons at the Indonesian Embassy; and the Australian Seal at the Austrian Embassy.

On the east side of Scott Circle is an imposing portrait sculpture of Daniel Webster, the “Great Compromiser” of the era before the Civil War.  In the middle of Scott Circle is the commanding equestrian statue of Lieutenant General Winfield Scott, the greatest US military figure of the early 19th Century, who participated in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. On the west side of Scott Circle is a memorial to Dr. Samuel Hannemann, the founder of homeopathic medicine.

Continuing east on Massachusetts Avenue, we will come to yet another equestrian statue of a Civil War hero: Major General George H. Thomas, in the middle of Scott Circle.  On the north side of Thomas Circle is a powerful portrait sculpture of Martin Luther—appropriate as we celebrate this year the 500th anniversary of the Reformation which Luther commenced in 1517.  Continuing in a spiritual mode, we will pass the sculpture of Christ, Light of the World, at the National Catholic Welfare Conference; then the statue of Edmund Burke, the historicist philosopher; and then the sculpture of Samuel Gompers, the founder of the American Federation of Labor.

Proceeding north to Logan Circle, we will conclude our tour with a final equestrian statue of a Civil War hero, Major John A. Logan.

    Will you be there?

Are you ready to dress your best, head out to the race tracks, enjoy the spring sun and be part of a grand social gathering steeped in tradition and fun?

The 2017 University Row will be celebrating its 19th season and remains the place to see and be seen. This year’s Row will build upon last year, with our expanded space across from Members Hill, along with new transportation and catering partners.

The Washington Post recognized the Row as “the primary social area” along the North Rail. We’ve continued to set new records in a number of categories, including sponsorship, alumni group recruitment, press coverage, and sales. Historically, we sell out within weeks of the race.

All tickets to University Row provide access to our exclusive tent area, our quality buffet, an open bar with premium liquor, beer, and wine selections, and of course, the races themselves. Most tickets also include luxury transportation to and from the Row. Since we treat all our guests like VIP’s, University Row provides the best value at the Virginia Gold Cup!

    Admission to University Row Includes:

The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers (DCJS) was founded in 2010 by Dr. Baruch Whitehead, associate professor of music education at Ithaca College, and is dedicated to the preservation of the "Negro Spirituals." This group of community singers, directed by Dr. Whitehead, was named in honor of current Ithaca resident Dorothy Cotton, civil rights pioneer who served as education director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  She was Director of Student Activities at Cornell in the ‘80’s. Currently, the DCJS perform at two semi-annual concerts, as invited participants for numerous community events and organizations (in both Ithaca and beyond), and as part of formal programs at Ithaca College and Cornell University. The programs at Ithaca College and Cornell have often been in conjunction with celebrations of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and Black History Month.

Paul Laurence Dunbar and Alice Dunbar-Nelson Walking Tour of LeDroit Park

    Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2:00 pm

    Limited to 25 people

    $16 members; $20 non-members

    Length: 2 hours

Starts and ends: Shaw Metro Station

This tour focuses on two remarkable writers who lived in Washington, DC in late 1890s to the early 1900s.  Paul Laurence Dunbar was the first African American poet to become nationally known.  His wife, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, is less well known, but she was also an accomplished writer of poetry, fiction, and journalism.  In addition, she taught high school, and was an activist for civil rights and women’s rights.  Both writers were in the first generation removed from slavery.  This tour tells the story of their accomplishments, their unhappy marriage, and his early death.  It also provides context for their lives in DC, discussing the African American intelligentsia who were drawn to LeDroit Park and the surrounding Shaw neighborhood in the years between the end of the Civil War and World War I.

Stops on the tour include the site of the Dunbars’ two homes, as well as homes of eminent neighbors: Robert and Mary Church Terrell, Christian and Sara Fleetwood, James E. Walker, and Anna Julia Cooper.  Other sites include the Dunbar Theater in the Southern Aid Society Building, Howard Theater, and Lucy Diggs Slowe Hall.

This tour is recommended for adults only, as a frank discussion of domestic violence will be included.  Those interested in American literature, Howard University, and the Reconstruction Era will find much here of interest.

    Tour Leader:

Kim Roberts is a literary historian who specializes in writers from Washington, DC. She is the author of five books of poems, most recently The Scientific Method (WordTech Editions, 2017). She is editor of the anthology Full Moon on K Street: Poems About Washington, DC (Plan B Press, 2010). Roberts co-edits the literary journals Beltway Poetry Quarterly and The Delaware Poetry Review, and the web exhibit DC Writers’ Homes. In 2018, the University of Virginia Press will release her newest book, A Literary History of Washington, DC from Frances Scott Key to Zora Neale Hurston. Her website: http://www.kimroberts.org.
