Interest Meeting: Meet others joining CCW's Community Service Committee!

Context: The ability of our club members to combine forces and participate in community service of all kinds in the DMV is one of the most rewarding and impactful aspects of membership. CCW's committees, points of contact, goals and meeting schedules are provided at our Committees Page so that our members can browse, choose a committee based on availability, and help out where their strengths will make a rewarding difference. Consult that page-- it's really helpful!

Where - virtual meeting (Google Meet) The Meeting Link will be emailed to registered participants a few hours before our meeting. If you are not a CCW member, we probably don't have your email address, so request the link from communityservice@cornellclubdc.org at least a few hours before the meeting-- thanks!

Date: Monday, September 28, 2026 (We will potentially choose "last Mondays" each month through June for our virtual meetings. Depending on interest, we may select to meet in person on occasion. We're flexible!

Learn about who in our group will run the Marine Corps Marathon for Stop Soldier Suicide this year. Donor links are at the top of our running group's web page . You can encourage our 3 Cornellians with a $$$$$$ donation big or small and feel GREAT about enhancing mental health resources for veterans' families in crisis. Meet one of our marathoners... ask about their mission and training, and be inspired to do your first marathon NEXT YEAR! We will help you get there!

After introductions, stretching and announcements, we divide into groups according to the choice of the trail suitable to your goals for the day.

This fall, the Big Red takes on Georgetown. Join us on Saturday, October 3, 2026, for an unforgettable Cornell gathering during Georgetown University's Homecoming.

Cornell and Georgetown have met 4 times before with a 2-2 record. Georgetown won in Ithaca more recently in a close game. Cornell won the 2 previous times by over 40 points each time.

This year's Homecoming also has a special connection: newly arrived Georgetown President Eduardo M. Peñalver ’94 is a Cornell alumnus.

Theodore Zinck was a saloonkeeper in Ithaca and his pub, the Hotel Brunswick, was a popular gathering place for Cornellians in the 1890s. After his death in 1903, several bars using his name continued to provide a haven for students. When the last “Zinck’s” closed in the mid-60s, celebrating the spirit of Zinck’s became a favorite Thursday night Collegetown tradition of undergraduates. It wasn't long afterwards that Cornellians continued the tradition in their hometowns.

We’ll hike up the steep roller-coaster part of the Appalachian Trail, up to the Old Fort, overlooking a nice strategic view of the Potomac River, then back down & around to the Maryland Heights with a photogenic view of Harper’s Ferry, set between the rivers, near Peregrine Falcon nests

Snack/lunch/photos from there, then back down.

This is a challenging hike. We’ll take water breaks as needed, but you should be prepared for the challenge. We’ll aim for a 2.4+ mph pace. Since there is a steady ascent, with over 1500 ft. el. gain, you should be able to do at least 3.2 mph on level ground. Bring enough water! Wear good hiking shoes or boots!

Parking may be limited, but the Visitor Center at 171 Shoreline Dr, Harpers Fy, WV usually has spaces for $20 or a National Park Pass.

Please allow for 15 minutes for the shuttle ride into town from the Visitor’s Center, in order to meet us at the town stop no later than 8:30AM. In case of rain, confirmed by the forecastr 2 days before the hike, we’ll re-schedule for October 24.

Lunch in town is possible after the hike.

CLASS AND GROUP BLOCKS: The following Cornell classes and groups will be organizing block seating for their classmates and group members: 1970, 1971, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, Assorted Aces Alumni, Glee Club/Chorus Alumni, Cornell Hillel, Quill and Dagger, Zeta Psi, Delta of Tau Epsilon Phi, and Family Fellows.

Class/group block tickets can be purchased HERE. Please note tickets purchased in class/group blocks will be sent out closer to event, rather than standard 3-5 business day timeline!
