Campuses all over America are humming with new courses of study and new research projects in “sustainability.” Come and hear what all the buzz is about at an outstanding program featuring the new Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future (CCSF) and the Cornell Club of Washington in the Keck Center of the National Academy of Sciences. This is a don’t-miss opportunity to hear Professor Frank DiSalvo, the Center's nationally known director, and his expert team describe the Center's mission and priorities in the burgeoning field of sustainability science.

Registration is now open and early signups are advised.

This event is sponsored in part by a grant from the Cornell Alumni Federation, and presented in conjunction with Cornell Sustainability Month 2009.

About the Speakers

Distinguished members of the Cornell Faculty will introduce alumni and potential partners in the Greater Washington area to the University's campus-wide, inter-disciplinary approach to sustainability science. Participating on the panel will be:

Frank DiSalvo, J.A. Newman Professor of Physical Science, and Director of CCSF;

Jeff Tester, Croll Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems, and CCSF's Associate Director, Energy Programs;

Anurag Agrawal, Associate Professor, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and CCSF's Associate Director for Environment Programs; and

Michael Hoffmann, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Director of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station.

Professor DiSalvo, himself a long-time member of the National Academy of Science, will lead the panel discussion about the research priorities of the new Center. "Energy, Environment and Economic Development" are the three key themes in the Center's approach to sustainability science. DiSalvo and the other panelists will also bring the audience up to date on trends on the Cornell campus which aspires to have a zero-carbon footprint and set an example for other universities.

CCSF's Associate Director for Economic Development Programs, Christopher S. Barrett, will not be participating in the panel presentation, but Prof. DiSalvo and the other panel members will be including some of the Economic Development aspects of the Center's work in their remarks.

CCW is proud to partner with Professor DiSalvo and his team to bring to the Nation's Capital this event, which will include a welcoming reception.

About the Keck Center

The Keck Center was opened in 2002 by the National Academy of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine to house their National Research Council and to help stimulate dialogue on diverse matters and major policy issues through expert meetings and workshops. CCW is privileged to be invited to use this facility. Note that due to space and security limitations, participation will be limited to about 150, and the list of attendees must be submitted to the National Research Council in advance.
