DC Public Schools Task Force Update - April/May 2008

CCW has been a long-time supporter of area schools through scholarship programs, book awards, and community service activities, and last fall it launched a DC Public Schools Task Force.

Comprised of over a dozen dedicated members, it is focused on identifying ways in which regional alumni can give of their time, talents, and resources to effectively improve the lives and education of DC students.

The Task Force first hosted an event on January 31st with DC Public Schools Chancellor, fellow-Cornellian Michelle Rhee ’92, where she provided insight into the DCPS 5 years strategic plan and her office's initial priorities.

They then talked with Steve Hamilton, Cornell's Associate Provost for Outreach, whose office is dedicated to solving real-world problems by linking people to Cornell's rich resources. The Task Force learned about activities and ideas already underway in support of promising low-income and minority youth including pioneering initiatives in New York.

Inputs from these valuable discussions were used to narrow down a long list of ideas to 3 key initiatives for implementation between now and the end of 2008.

  • Supporting existing DC summer academic camps or schools including Dept. of Parks and Recreation programs. (Chair Kate Bryant, )
  • Developing after school or summer programs using the application of math and science, initially partnering with DC KIPP Charter Schools. (Chair Rebecca Vichniac, )
  • Promoting internships for DCPS High School Seniors to enhance career and technical education. (Chair Bob Day, )

We need your help to make the most significant impact possible with what is available. Please contact the Chairs listed above with any resources you have to offer to further these initiatives.
