About the CCW DC Public Schools Task Force
Update · Posted April 23, 2009
CCW has been a long-time supporter of area schools through scholarship programs, book awards, and community service activities. Last year it launched a DC Public Schools Task Force comprised of over a dozen dedicated members focused on identifying ways in which regional alumni can give of their time, talents, and resources to effectively improve the lives and education of DC students.
The Task Force hosted an event January 2008 with DC Public Schools Chancellor, fellow-Cornellian Michelle Rhee ’92, where she provided insight into the DCPS 5 years strategic plan and her office's initial priorities. It also talked with Steve Hamilton, Cornell's Associate Provost for Outreach, whose office is dedicated to solving real-world problems by linking people to Cornell's rich resources.
Inputs from these valuable discussions were used to narrow down a long list of ideas to 3 key initiatives for implementation for the 2008-2009 school year.
- Supporting existing DC youth programs starting with the DC Dept. of Parks and Recreation. (Chair Lenora Moragne, )
- Developing the Cornell Prep pilot program with DC KIPP Charter Schools, weekend or summer programs with dedicated staff focused on the application of math and science. (Chair Rebecca Vichniac, )
- Promoting internships for DCPS High School studentsto enhance career and technical education. (Chair Bob Day, )
We need your help to make the most significant impact possible with the resources available. Please contact the Chairs listed above with any offers to help further these initiatives.
