The Human Superorganism - Evening Program with Book Signing

Are we sanitizing ourselves to death? It’s quite possible that our desire to live in a germ-free environment is fueling a global epidemic of noncommunicable (chronic) diseases, from Alzheimer's, allergies, cancer, and heart disease to diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and even some forms of depression. The effects are being felt in skyrocketing healthcare costs and an erosion in quality of life for people everywhere.

    Costs - $20 Smithsonian member, $30 others.

Rodney Dietert, a professor of immunotoxicology at Cornell University, addresses the consequences of the assault on the microbiome—microorganisms that comprise about 90 percent of the cells in and on our bodies—in his new book, The Human Superorganism: How the Microbiome Is Revolutionizing the Pursuit of a Healthy Life. Understanding the microbiome is only one part of a new biology paradigm Dietert describes. First, we need to think of ourselves as superorganisms—human ecosystems—and he outlines specific steps we should take to sustain ourselves. Dietert identifies foods that best serve that purpose—not fad foods but nutrition that has made sense for millennia. He explains protective measures to take against unsafe chemicals and drugs and offers a self-care guide and a blueprint for a revolution in public health, which are all beginning steps back to a healthier world.

    • Old Rag Mountain, Sperryville, VA
Alumni and Cornell in Washington students will climb Old Rag Mountain, near Sperryville, VA, for the 62nd time in our semiannual trek into the Blue Ridge.  This is one of the Washington area's most popular excursions, and we expect a large turnout (25-40 people) each time we go.

The first 1/3 of the strenuous, 9-mile hike (summit 3268 ft.; elevation gain 2300 ft.) is on an uphill trail through the trees, while the upper part is open and rocky. Bring lunch and water in a day-pack, and be sure to wear a hat and sturdy shoes. The total time needed for climbing, enjoying the view, eating, and descending is about 6 hours. We usually get back to D.C. around 7:00 pm. The Park Service does not allow more hikers after the parking lot is full. Therefore, a prompt 7:45am start from the Cornell Center is needed for this full-day event.

Note: this is a very difficult hike; those who have not hiked a trail like Old Rag's are strongly encouraged to e-mail or call Clint Brass, using the contact information below, if you would like to get more information before RSVPing.

    • The Arts Club of Washington, 2017 I Street NW, Washington DC
The Cornell Club of Washington  is pleased to host the Ivy Singles Happy Hour Fall Kick-Off!

We invite you to join us at this charming historic landmark, the James Monroe House, just off Pennsylvania Avenue.

When Timothy Caldwell, a wealthy businessman from Philadelphia, decided in 1806 to build “the handsomest house in the Capital City,” little did he dream that it would one day serve as home for President James Monroe, ambassadors foreign and domestic, the nation’s first weatherman, and the city’s oldest club devoted to the arts.

Inspired by London’s Chelsea Arts Club and the National Arts Club in Manhattan, Washington artists created their own club in May 1916 and purchased the Monroe House as its home. With a focus on painting, sculpture, music, and drama, the Arts Club provided a contrast to Washington’s more traditional clubs. It was also the first club in the city to admit women as charter members.

Explore two floors of spacious rooms where monthly exhibits of paintings and photography line the walls

Relax with old friends and meet new ones.   A good selection of appetizers will be served, and happy hour drink prices will be available for the duration of our party at the cash bar.

Pre-paid reservations:  Online or send $35 check payable to Cornell Club of Washington to

    • Old Rag Mountain, Sperryville, VA

Rain date for Old Rag Hike scheduled for Sepetmber 10 - Only if 9/10 hike is cancelled because of weather.

    • TBD Washington, DC 20036

The Cornell Club of Washington invites all fellow alums in Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland and around the world to celebrate the legacy and tradition of Theodore Zinck's for one of the most anticipated Cornell events of the year!

Theodore Zinck was a saloonkeeper in Ithaca and his pub, the Hotel Brunswick, was a popular gathering place for Cornellians in the 1890s. After his death in 1903, several bars using his name continued to provide a haven for students. When the last “Zinck’s” closed in the mid-60s, celebrating the spirit of Zinck’s became a favorite Thursday night Collegetown tradition of undergraduates. It wasn't long afterwards that Cornellians continued the tradition in their hometowns.

So come on out and celebrate this longstanding tradition of "Cornell Community" with your local community of Washington, DC alums!

The DACOR-Bacon House and Foundation now serve as a “place to facilitate international peace and understanding” as well as a conference and meeting place for the Organization of Foreign Affairs Professionals known as DACOR.

Each floor of the DACOR-Bacon House will be festively decorated for the holiday season. We will feast on hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and enjoy a fine selection of wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks from a cash bar. Consistent with our elegant surroundings, please come dressed in holiday, cocktail or business attire.
