On Sunday, August 16, the Cornell Club of Washington, Judy Gleklen Kopff (Arts '68), and Gary Kopff (Johnson School '71) held their annual student send-off dinner party for new frosh and transfer students. Invitations were sent to incoming freshmen who were ’09 graduates of area high schools. Of the 120 students who had been invited, close to half attended the party. A panel of five current and recent graduates described their experiences at Cornell and discussed:
- Fraternities and sororities,
- Housing and meal plans,
- Academics (including class size, interaction with professors and teaching assistants, junior year abroad or in Washington, and research/summer courses abroad),
- Extracurriculars (athletics, clubs, newspaper, etc.),
- Miscellaneous: weather, checking accounts, what to bring for the dorm room, laptop vs. desktop, orientation week, bicycles and cars vs. public transportation, transportation to and from Cornell over holidays (e.g., CB-Bus), and Cornell Facebook web site for freshmen.
The panelists were: Nicole Kim, rising sophomore in Engineering; Vesna Harasic, rising sophomore in Arts; Aaron Berger, Arts ‘09; Dennis Shiraev, rising sophomore in Arts; and David DyTang, rising sophomore in Human Ecology.
