Cornell’s Heavyweight Crew is bringing its Varsity, Jr. Varsity and 1st Freshmen Eights to Washington to compete in this year's George Washington Invitational Regatta. on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, April 10-11. The George Washington University rowing program hosts the event, which is the largest collegiate rowing competition in the Washington metropolitan area.

or the third straight year, each team will enter all its boats in three separate Dual Meets-- one on Friday afternoon, and two on Saturday--to be held on the 2000-meter, Potomac River race course. Best viewing is at the Finish Line, located at Washington Harbour in Georgetown. Regatta headquarters will be at Thompson Boat Center near the intersection of Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Avenue, NW.

The Cornell boats will race as follows, with times and other details yet to be announced on the GW Invitational Regatta's website (www.gwir.org):

  • Friday afternoon........Cornell versus host GWU--3 races
  • Saturday morning......Cornell versus Gonzaga U, Spokane, WA--3 races Saturday afternoon....Cornell versus Georgetown University--3 races

Look for the Cornell Club's 10×10 red canopy and the Big Red Crew's tent, both of which will be located beside the Cornell boat trailer on or near the Park Service parking lot at Thompson Boat Center, reserved for participating crews during the Regatta. Wear red and meet alumni, students and their families, and other friends of Cornell rowing at our RED tents.

The Cornell Crews, perennially among the tops in the East, are now coached by Todd Kennett, the new "Spirit of '57" Director of Rowing. This will be Todd's first trip to D.C. in his new capacity, after leading the Cornell Lightweights through three consecutive championship seasons and three trips to the Henley Royal Regatta in England. Boat speed is a hallmark of Todd's crews. That's what they train for, so come on down to the banks of the Potomac and cheer them on in this series of exciting races.
