Since 1987, Peter Weygandt of Weygandt-Metzler Importing has been an importer of top artisanal European wines. He has gained an international reputation for the quality and diversity of his selections. Weygandt Wines in Washington, DC, is the next natural step for Weygandt-Metzler: a retail store dedicated to showcasing Peter’s portfolio, from the most well-known viticultural regions and winemakers to lesser-known appellations as well as up-and-coming producers. It is a place where consumers can come to learn about the portfolio, and occasionally meet the importer and our winemakers.

The Lineup of Wines:

Domaine du Vissoux Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc de Blancs NV – Burgundy, France – 100% Chardonnay – 12% abv – Organic – The bouquet is deep and complex, as it offers up scents of apple, pear, warm bread and chalky soil tones. On the palate the wine is fullish, crisp and complex, with lovely focus, good mid-palate depth, and good length and grip on the finish. The mousse here is fine and delicate, and this wine offers impressive complexity and fine balance and offers lovely value as non-Champagne sparkler.

Serge Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé Les Pentes 2012 – Pouilly-Fumé, Loire Valley, France – 100% Sauvignon Blanc – 12.5% abv – Organic – This offers up a refined and utterly classic nose of grapefruit, orange, flinty soil tones, cut grass, green apple and just a hint of pepper. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and zesty, with a vibrant core of fruit, lovely soil signature and fine cut and grip on the long and bouncy finish. Just a classic bottle of fine Pouilly-Fumé.

Domaine Servin Chablis Selection Massale Vieilles Vignes 2011 – Chablis, Burgundy, France – 100% Chardonnay – 12.5% abv – Sustainable – Representing Servin’s continued experiment with the extremes of long elevage, this displays unusually salt- and iodine-rich mineral notes. Polished and expansive yet simultaneously buoyant and refreshing, this integrates fruit pit along with the aforementioned minerality into a matrix of white peach and grapefruit.

Domaine les Aphillanthes Côtes du Rhône Rosé 2013 – Côtes du Rhône, Southern Rhône, France – 60% Cinsault, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 10% Mourvèdre – 13.5% abv – Biodynamic – Light reddish salmon color. From this biodynamically farmed, brilliantly run estate owned by Daniel Boulle, this displays fresh aromas of strawberries, earth, and spice, good acidity, medium body, loads of fruit, and a dry style. A delectable rose to drink over the next two years.

La Bastide Blanche Bandol Rosé 2013 – Bandol, Provence, France – 62% Mourvèdre, 18% Cinsault, 16% Grenache, 2% Ugni Blanc, 2% Bourboulenc – 13.5% abv – Organic – Bright orange-pink. Intense aromas of raspberry and cherry, with subtle anise and blood orange accents. Juicy, penetrating red berry and bitter cherry flavors show very good depth and enlivening juicy acidity. Finishes with good breadth and cling, leaving floral and cherry pit notes behind.

Yannick Amirault Bourgueil La Coudraye 2012 – Bourgueil, Loire Valley, France – 35% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre – 12.5% abv – Organic – A blend of the three major soil types of Bourgueil: tuffeau, gravel and flint, with the wine raised in older foudres and bottled unfiltered. This offers up a lovely nose of dark berries, black cherries, a touch of tree bark, woodsmoke, dark soil tones and a bit of espresso. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a nice core of sappy fruit, suave tannins and excellent length and grip on the complex finish. This wine will age beautifully, but with a bit of decanting, it is already quite accessible, due to its impeccable balance.

Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2011
– Gigondas, Southern Rhône, France – 100% Grenache – 15% abv – Sustainable – A dense, beautifully-made, ripe effort displaying lots of licorice, strawberry, kirsch, lavender and balsam wood characteristics. Full, rich and dense with terrific fruit intensity, it should turn out to be outstanding since there is no fining or filtration at this estate. It will age well for 7-8
