Since 1987, Peter Weygandt of Weygandt-Metzler Importing has been an importer of top artisanal European wines. He has gained an international reputation for the quality and diversity of his selections. Weygandt Wines in Washington, DC, is the next natural step for Weygandt-Metzler: a retail store dedicated to showcasing Peter’s portfolio, from the most well-known viticultural regions and winemakers to lesser-known appellations as well as up-and-coming producers. It is a place where consumers can come to learn about the portfolio, and occasionally meet the importer and our winemakers.

WINES

1. Cantine Grotta del Sole Gragnano Otto Uve Penisola Sorrentina DOC, $17 – Campania, Italy – Aglianico, Piedirosso, Sciascinoso, Olivella, Supprezza, Castagnara, Sauca, Surbegna – There’s a low amount of firm bubbles right out of the bottle. The dark flavors made complex by the baking spices become noticeably drier in the middle and eventually, quite thick. It is really quite complex despite the fruit-forward, youthful start, particularly the play between dryness and spices as well as the continued presence on the tongue.

2. Tami' Frappato IGT, $22 – Sicily, Italy – 100% Frappato – One week maceration on skins. Fermented and aged in stainless steel for 6 months. This has a perfumed strawberry nose, but it also has some great rustic brambly smells too--herby bushes making their way through the hot and dry landscape. It has some good minerality, a pretty, medium body and a punch of ocean in its acidity. It is fresh and lovely; tasting first of fruit and then of the terroir. A very easy-to-like sipping wine.

3. Fattoria Nittardi Chianti Classico Belcanto DOCG, $25 – Tuscany, Italy – 90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda and Pugnitello. – Ruby-red, juicy cherry and raspberry with hints of Mediterranean herbs and floral notes on the nose. Medium bodied with grippy tannins on the palate and a fresh and long finish. Belcanto pairs well with starters and main courses of the creative Tuscan cuisine.

4. La Ca' Nova Nebbiolo DOC, $25/btl – Piedmont, Italy – 100% Nebbiolo – This is a great value option with quality fruit from a classic vintage. This pretty wine opens to a light ruby color and a luminous appearance. The bouquet exhibits wild berry, licorice and a strong mineral signature with dusty granite and crushed flint. It leaves a lasting impression of elegance and linearity.

5. Castell Sallegg Lagrein Riserva, $33/btl– Alto Adige, Italy – 100% Lagrein – Deep ruby. Dark plum, herbs, violet and ink on the initially closed nose. Enters the mouth rich and thick, then turns fresher and lighter in the middle, with blueberry, tobacco and underbrush flavors lifted by lively, harmonious acidity. Nicely concentrated, smoothly tannic Lagrein with a long, delicately spicy finish.

6. Tenuta Olim Bauda Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza, $35/btl – Piedmont, Italy – 100% Barbera – Blackberry jam, graphite, melted road tar and cloves burst from the glass in an energetic, tense wine with energy and vibrancy to burn. A striking, stunningly beautiful wine, this has enough class to drink well for a decade.

7. Ventolaio Brunello di Montalcino, $60/btl – Tuscany, Italy – 100% Sangiovese – Medium red. Pretty perfume combines raspberry, cherry, menthol, rose petal and mint. A sweet, juicy midweight with very good clarity and concentration to its red fruit flavors. Not the last word in depth but quite perfumed in a sangiovese way and elegant in the style of the vintage. Finishes with soft tannins, good verve and lingering red fruits and flowers.
