CCW Announces Partnership with DC Dept of Parks & Rec: Volunteers Needed
Update · Posted August 23, 2008
Volunteer your time for CCW's new partnership with the DC Dept of Parks and Recreation to improve the lives and education of DC students.
One of the initiatives the Task Force has identified for the 2008-2009 school year is a partnership with the DC Dept. of Parks & Recreation. We will be launching a pilot program at two sites in September with the goal of improving the students’ academic achievement by providing educational opportunities during out-of-school hours.
Please consider volunteering your time for the programs we are rolling out at each of the two recreation centers as follows.
King Greenleaf Recreation Center
201 N St. SW, Washington DC (Metro: Navy Yard or Waterfront-SEU (Green line), 10 min walk)
Homework Help: Tutors are needed to assist students with their study and homework assignments across various subject areas weekdays from 3:15-5pm, Saturdays from 10:30am-12:30pm, and 7-9pm on Wednesdays, launching the week of September 15th. Tutors would attend an orientation session the week of September 8th to be introduced to the recreation center staff, tour the facility, understand the objectives for this partnership, and learn best practices for managing effective study time.
If interested, please email Lenora Moragne at with the days and times you would be available to tutor each week. If you are unable to participate weekly, but could come during a certain week out of each month, please indicate this.
Educational Field Trips: A small group of volunteers are needed to work with center staff on the development of a series of educational field trips (at least 2 per semester). Volunteers could work with participants prior to, during, or following the field trip to reinforce learning from the experience. Some ideas include the National Book Fair on the Mall or the free nightly concerts at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. If interested, please email Lenora Moragne at .
Food and Health Education Volunteers are needed to work with the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion and Cornell’s Center for Learning and Teaching to develop nutritional education resources including a healthy eating policy statement, an educational take home flyer, and a workshop for students and staff on the importance of healthy foods in every child’s life.
Due to the physical nature of much of the center’s activities, this could additionally include a workshop by a sports medicine professional. f interested, please email Lenora Moragne at .
