Since 1987, Peter Weygandt of Weygandt-Metzler Importing has been an importer of top artisanal European wines. He has gained an international reputation for the quality and diversity of his selections. Weygandt Wines in Washington, DC, is the next natural step for Weygandt-Metzler: a retail store dedicated to showcasing Peter’s portfolio, from the most well-known viticultural regions and winemakers to lesser-known appellations as well as up-and-coming producers. It is a place where consumers can come to learn about the portfolio, and occasionally meet the importer and our winemakers.

The Lineup of Wines:

Tasting notes, explanations of the wines, varietals, regions, vignerons, techniques, etc., will be provided -- some want more info, some less. We will provide as much info as needed.

Albert Mann Crémant d'Alsace 2011, $23/btl – Alsace, France – 60% Pinot Blanc, 35% Auxerrois, 5% Chardonnay – 12.5% abv – Biodynamic – This benefited from 18 months sur latte to gain a leesy sense of textural richness. A saline savor plays against ripe peach, apple and citrus. The finish refreshes while tugging gently on the salivary glands. Once again, the Barthelmes have demonstrated like few other growers just how seriously delicious a Cremant d’Alsace can be.

Pichler-Krutzler Grüner Veltliner Frauengärten 2012, $22/btl – Wachau, Niederösterreich, Austria – 100% Grüner Veltliner – 12.5% abv – Organic – White pepper and crushed stone lend pungency in the nose, then accent a succulent palate saturation of herb-infused ripe honeydew melon and herbs. This is delightfully pure, minerally intense, with harmoniously balanced acid.

Domaine de La Chapelle Saint-Veran Madame Noly 2011, $20/btl – Saint-Veran, Burgundy, France – 100% Chardonnay – 13% abv – Organic – Enticing aromas of white peach, pear, orange blossom, lavender and crushed stone.  Uncompromisingly dry and intense but not hard, with powerful penetrating saline minerality leavened by a repeating note of orange blossom.  Really clings to the palate on the dusty finish without leaving any impression of weight.

Domaine de Prion Fleurie Vieilles Vignes 2010
, $28/btl – Beaujolais, Burgundy, France – 100% Gamay – 13.5% abv – Organic –  Domaine de Prion produces their old vine bottling from a selection of seventy to eighty year-old vines and which they then raise in two year-old Burgundy barrels purchased from Domaine Ramonet in Chassagne. The 2010 Vieilles Vignes is a stunning bottle of Fleurie, offering up a vibrant bouquet of red and black cherries, exotic spice tones, a lovely base of complex soil nuances, woodsmoke and dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and very pure, with excellent intensity of flavor, a sappy core, lovely focus and grip and a very long, softly tannic and perfectly balanced finish.

Azienda Agricola Reverdito Michele Barolo 2009
, $35/btl – Barolo, Piedmont, Italy – 100% Nebbiolo – 14% abv – Sustainable – Dark cherry-auburn color in the glass. Aromas of smoke, bacot fat and mushrooms and underlying lightly gamey note. The palate, shows fine tannins, smooth body with flavors of raspberry, fig and mushroom. Throughout the whole experience, the wine maintains a lithe and elegant presence. More of a drink-me-now Barolo.

Domaine Les Grands Bois Rasteau Cuvée Marc 2010
, $25/btl – Southern Rhône, France – 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre – 14.5% abv – Sustainable – Aged for 11 months in demi-muids, this medium to full-bodied effort is loaded with fruit and texture, showing copious amounts of raspberry, mineral, creamy licorice, and crushed flower-like qualities on the nose. Intense, concentrated, and rich, as well as fresh and pure, it is one serious 2011 that drinks well beyond its price point. It should be ready to go on release, and shine for 4-6 years.

Juan Manuel Burgos Avan Ribera del Duero Nacimiento 2010
, $23/btl – Ribera del Duero, Spain – 100% Tempranillo – 14.5% abv – Sustainable – Dark purple. Deep, brooding aromas of blackcurrant, cured tobacco and licorice are enlivened by a spicy nuance. Chewy, concentrated dark berry flavors show impressive energy and become spicier with air. Finishes on a note of cherry compote, with gentle spicy lift and sweet persistence.
